abstract

plasma electrolytic oxidation (peo) is the new, environmentally and cost-effective method for coating the metals. this method vastly has been studied for coating aluminum, titanium and magnesium and their alloys and recently for steel. in present study, ck45 steel samples were coated by peo method in order to improve corrosion resistance. during this process specimens were immerged in carbonate solution contains sodium dehydrogen phosphate (nah2po4) and sodium carbonate (na2co3) with ph equaled 8.3. composition and microstructure of the coating were investigated by x-ray diffraction (xrd) and scanning electron microscopy (sem). the electrochemical corrosion behavior of coated and uncoated species was verified in 3.5% nacl solution by potentiodynamic polarization technique. the result of xrd and sem test showed that nanocrystale particles of fe3o4 were successfully formed on the surface of samples while the average size of particles and phase were less than 800nm. grain size was estimated about less than 80 nm. corrosion test exhibited the remarkable improvement (about three times) in corrosion resistance of coated samples (16023 ω) compared with those without coating (5200.4 ω).

Characterization of Porous TiO2 Surfaces Formed on 316L Stainless Steel by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation for Stent Applications

In this study, a porous oxide layer was formed on the surface of 316L stainless steel (SS) by combining Ti magnetron sputtering and plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) with the aim to produce a polymer-free drug carrier for drug eluting stent (DES) applications. The oxidation was performed galvanostatically in Na3PO4 electrolyte. The surface porosity, average pore size and roughness varied with...

Effect of KOH concentration on the microstructure and electrochemical behavior of ceramic coatings formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation method on AZ31B Mg alloy

In this study, ceramic coatings were prepared on AZ31B Mg alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation technique in electrolytes containing sodium fluoride (KF), sodium silicate (Na2SiO3.5H2O) and different potassium hydroxide (KOH) concentrations. The electrochemical behavior of AZ31B alloy and plasma electrolytic oxidation coatings was studied by potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impeda...

Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation Coatings on Lightweight Metals

Lightweight metals, e.g. aluminum (Al), magnesium (Mg), titanium (Ti) and their alloys are of great importance for applications in various machinery and transportation system, espe‐ cially in aerospace and automobile products due to their high strength-to-weight ratio and superior physical and chemical performances. However, their poor tribological properties, such as low wear resistance, high ...

SEM, EDS AND XPS ANALYSIS OF NANOSTRUCTURED COATING FORMED ON NiTi BIOMATERIAL ALLOY BY PLASMA ELECTROLYTIC OXIDATION (PEO)

Original scientific paper Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) of NiTi alloy was studied in the electrolyte consisting generally of concentrated orthophosphoric acid with an addition of copper II nitrate. The PEO process was used to obtain a nanostructured coating on the Nitinol surface. The surface layer analyses methods, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with the energy-dispersive X-r...

Investigation of the effect of electrolyte on acoustical behaviour of ceramic coatings produced by method Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) on titanium

In this paper, titanium oxide coating (TiO2) was produced on titanium alloy Ti6Al4V by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) Method. Sodium Silicate (Na2SiO3) and Sodium Aluminate (NaAlO2) based electrolytes were selected in PEO process. The effects of concentration of Sodium Aluminate (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 g/L) on the microstructure and acoustical behaviour of the formed coatings were studied....
